As I go through the month, I inevitably end up spending more in a given category than I budgeted. So as to not overdraw my account, I do a bunch of envelope transfers to reallocate funds. However, I want to be able to know long term how much I actually spent in each category. Will reports show that I budgeted an amount to x category but then gave away z amount of it to a different envelope?
Your reports should show your actual spending, regardless of your budgeted totals. You may find that you’re consistently moving money into or out of an envelope, leading you to revise your budgets after you have some data points. But a budget is just a guideline, so good job for keeping it fluid!
