Hi,
I started july 1 and now i’m getting ready for august 1 and I am wondering - do I just “refill” all my envelopes? only ones i expect to use in august? also, i went “over-budget” for several envelopes (i kind of knew i would) - do i just refill these envelopes? do these particular envelopes go back to zero? will refilling these start the next month at full amount or will the new funds in the envelop be subtracted from the negative balances.
thanks,
Art
Welcome!
To start the new month, you’ll need to schedule a Fill transaction. Whether you want to zero out envelopes you won’t use this month, reset some to their budgeted amounts, or “roll over” any over- or underages will be totally up to you.
When you schedule a Fill, you’ll notice that each envelope has a toggle next to it, either Add or Set. If you choose “Set”, the app will add or subtract enough from Available to make that envelope match the budgeted amount (or a different amount you put in the box, if you want to override). Choosing “Add” will simply add the amount specified, so you’ll effectively carry over any balances from the current period. Finally, if you want an envelope to be empty this month you can instruct your Fill to “Set” with an amount of “0.00”, and that will be the opening balance. Be sure that after you’ve filled your envelopes, your Available balance is still positive or zero to prevent overdrafts.
If you want to do this for each month on the 1st, just check the box to “Schedule This” and choose Monthly (or whatever frequency you prefer). It will then use those instructions on a schedule.
It’s important to note that any changes you make to a scheduled Fill before it posts will be reflected in that Fill and all those following, but if you make a change AFTER it’s gone into your ledger it won’t update based on the new instructions or based on any transactions from a previous period that are entered after the fact.
Hope that helps!
