I reached out to the team via email back in March of 2024, but I was wondering if maybe some community insight might help them see if this is something lots of people could use, and hopefully it might bump it up on the priority list. I checked out Reddit but the subreddit isn’t very active, so I thought I’d post here; I hope that is appropriate.
I would love for them to consider adding shared accounts, and the ability to toggle between multiple different household budgets (including private budgets exclusive to specific accounts.)
I’m recently married and I was using GoodBudget before my husband and I got engaged for my personal finances. Now that we’re married, we’ve chosen to combine some of our income into a joint account, but not all.
In regards to GoodBudget, this presented two problems:
- I had to share my login information with him, rather than him setting up his own account and just piggybacking onto my household. This feels weird to me. It would be nice to have two separate accounts with separate passwords, that can be granted access to the same thing(s). That would open up a way to track who input what transactions, too, which would be an amazing bonus in addition to not having to share one account with everyone in your household.
- Because there is no way to have more than one household/overall budget, I had to entirely remove my personal account from the app if I didn’t want to make our envelope organization overly complex, and if I didn’t want him to see what’s in my personal account. (I’d hate for him to see when I’m buying him Christmas presents, and for how much, etc.!) I had to download an entirely separate app for my personal finances, which is definitely not ideal (especially if GoodBudget is your favorite!)
I would love to be able to have all of my finance tracking in one place, and I want it to be GoodBudget, because I think the interface is amazing! But I want to be able to keep my personal things separate from our household things, and I’d like to be able to have my own account, separate from my husband and our future kids. (Additionally, if they added these two features, it could open up use of GoodBudget to other kinds of households as well - such as roommates or students living in dorms - because they could keep track of their personal finances privately, while being able to toggle over to a “household budget” for their dorm/apartment, without having to share private information!)
I feel like the community could really use these two quality-of-life changes, and I was hoping if I found people who agreed with me they might consider them a priority! I think they would greatly improve the functionality and accessibility for households with multiple people and multiple incomes!
