I deleted an envelope I don't use anymore. What happens to all the transactions?

Hey Guys, I deleted an envelope I don’t need anymore. I transfered the balance to another envelope before I did.

Does the money stay transferred to the envelope or does all the money that was put in there ever go back to available balance?

I don’t see the transfer there now. Fortunately I only had one transaction in it so I just moved that one to another envelope. How has all this affected my available balances? What happened when I undeleted that transaction and put it somewhere else?

When you delete an envelope WITH a balance, the remaining funds go back into Available. If the envelope didn’t have a balance (as yours presumably didn’t, since you’d done a transfer) then there’s no change to any of your envelopes. The transactions from the envelope will still be in your ledger, but the envelope name will be struck through and you just won’t be able to make any further tx from there. None of the transactions are deleted when an account or envelope is removed.

I think you’re saying you reassigned Envelopes in your original Envelope Transfer. In that case, reassigning Envelopes in that original Envelope Transfer will change the balances in both your new ‘From’ Envelope and your Available.

Your new ‘From’ Envelope will have a lower balance (since you’re not taking money from that Envelope), which will then increase the balance of your Available.

I don’t think I did that here’s what I did.

  1. I went to my budget and changed the monthly fill of envelope A to zero.
  2. I put in a transfer from envelope A to envelope b of the remaining balance
  3. I deleted envelope a
  4. I fiddled with it more and move the only transaction that was in envelope a to envelope b.
  5. I deleted the transfer

my questions are:

  1. the money that was once in a transfer, is that in available balance?
  2. is there a way to delete the envelope from the old fills such that it is like it never existed.
  3. When I moved that single transaction that was in envelope a. What happened to the money that would have reappeared in envelope a after it was moved. Is that in available balance?

Sorry for such a mess

Hi Tim,

Thanks for clarifying! I’ll address your questions below.

  1. the money that was once in a transfer, is that in available balance?

The transfers associated with your deleted Envelopes won’t be visible in your Available, but I think it might be helpful to think of transactions associated with deleted Envelopes as “attached” to your Available, in a sense. Anytime you reassign a transaction (transfer or expense) that’s connected to a deleted Envelope, the balance of your Available will change.

  1. is there a way to delete the envelope from the old fills such that it is like it never existed.

Yes, you’ll just find your old Fills, then find your ‘Deleted’ Envelope in the Fill, and set the fill amount to 0.00. If you want to keep your Available balance the same, you should redistribute the amount that was going to your Deleted Envelope to a different Envelope.

  1. When I moved that single transaction that was in envelope a. What happened to the money that would have reappeared in envelope a after it was moved. Is that in available balance?

That’s right! When you reassigned that transaction (which I think is an expense?), the new Envelope’s balance decreased, and your Available balance increased.

If the transaction in question was a transfer, the same would have happened – the new Envelope’s balance would have changed up or down, and then Available would have also adjusted.

Hope that all helps!
