It would be great if there is a way to manage multiple househoulds/seperate budgets within the same account. This as not all bank accounts should be freely used between envelopes (e.g. if I want to manage envelopes for my kids). One option could be to assign envelopes to specific bank accounts.
Hi @Michiel_Visser,
Thanks for posting! I’ve added your thoughts to our tracker, but that’s not something we’re considering right now. As a workaround, you can use Envelope Groups as a way to mimic having multiple budgets or to help you mimic “linking” Envelopes to specific Accounts.
For example, if you wanted to link a Group of Envelopes with your Checking Account, you’d create a Group like this:
- Checking: Groceries
- Checking: Eating Out
- Checking: Rent
All of those Envelopes would be lumped together, and the balances of the Envelope summed up should match the balance of your Checking Account. Going forward, you would only use those Envelopes with your Checking Account so that the balances of the Envelopes continued to match the Account.
Hope that helps!
Karisa
Thank, I’ve been considering this but it requires manual maintaining to ensure the total of the grouped envelopes is identical to the bank accounts they should be used for which is very cumbersome especially with future transactions and thus easily leads to cross poluation of funds.
This has come up often—in our case it’s because we have accounts in two different countries and currencies, so we can’t have all the money pooled into one household since the funds don’t have the same value. I know it’s never been added to the plans, but I REALLY wish it could be considered.
The issue is compounded by the fact that opening a new tab on the web for our second household isn’t possible, because the first tab switches to the new household too. I have to use two separate BROWSERS to do my budgeting. And toggling with the app doesn’t work because we’ve been with GB for so long that loading the old account seems to chew through bandwidth and takes forever. My mobile workaround is to have my daily UK budget in the app and the US household open in Firefox—still a slog.
Is it really such a huge uprev to add a toggle between households? We’ve been asking about it for years :’(
