Can bank import bring in the same transaction twice? Or is this my fault somehow?

I have been trying to track down why the balance of my checking account did not match the balance of my account in Goodbudget for a few hours now and I found a duplicate transaction recorded in my history. The weird thing to me is that they both seem to have come from a bank sync import and I didn’t know that this could happen. I have had problems with duplicate transactions in the past but that was because I recorded a transaction twice before I used bank sync or because I failed to match a manually recorded transaction to a bank sync transaction.
Is it possible something I did caused it to reimport an already imported bank sync transaction?

Thank you,
Seth

Hi @seth - Thanks for posting, and sorry for the trouble with seeing duplicate imported transactions! The sort answer is, yes, that is possible. Each imported transaction has a unique number called a FITID that Goodbudget records to keep track of which transactions have already been imported. If your bank changes a transaction’s FITID for any reason, then Goodbudget won’t be able to keep track of that transaction, allowing it to be imported again.

We use Plaid to create the connections between Goodbudget and yours banks. Earlier this year, Chase specifically had several known issues with their Plaid integration that caused duplicate transaction issues for some customers. Those issues have since been resolved, but it’s possible that may be why you’re seeing that particular duplicate transaction.

If you’re still seeing duplicates now, email us at support@goodbudget.com, and we can take a look to see if there’s something impacting Chase currently.
