2 accounts and 2 set of envelopes

Hi there new to GB coming from YNAB.
I just need to get used to the new app that I like at a first look and t’m trying to get a little deeper. I was testing the free subscription but I was actually missing the possibility to manage 2 separate accounts that I have in the same bank, which are ment to have their specific envelopes and have obviously have their indipendent balance ( one is a personal account ad the other is shared with my wife but I monthly move money from one to another to “fill” the shared one with my part) . I thought that I could get there getting the premium version ( for 1 month as a test) but unfortunatelly this option is still missing.
Is there a chance I could use the this app for my purpouse o should I use two different app?
thanks
Federico

It sounds like maybe you’re not thinking of envelopes the way they’re designed—they’re not attached to specific accounts as you’ve described (with the exception of Debt) but rather show the aggregate amount of money available to spend. For example, if Account 1 has a balance of 1000 and Account 2 has a balance of 500, you’ll show an available amount in the Envelopes side of 1500 which you can distribute among envelopes like Food, Housing, Transportation, etc. If you wanted to share expenses, you’d want to budget the envelopes that way, e.g. My Housing (250) and Partner’s Housing (100), then fill them from income as it’s received. You can always transfer money between Accounts, or between Envelopes, but the two sides of the budget are independent of, but related directly to, each other. Does that help?

Hi tiffany and thanks for your fast answer,
I totally get what you say.
I should create “MY envelope” and fill it with the amount of money of account 1
and than create " OUR envelope" and fill it with the amount of money of account 2
If I get it right it sound like a “trick” to me. The balance of the two accounts would be added and they are not ( sorry this is the Virgo in me, writing)
by the way let say can go through this  the problem is about grouping the under envelopes
I’ve read about grouping the envelopes with the “:”. Once I create those 2 envelopes I should group MY stuff under “MY ENVELOPE:” and “OUR ENVELOPE:” is there a further level of grouping envelopes? if not “OUR ENVELOPE” would turn in a mess between tens and tens of categories.

I’m not entirely sure I understand all of your follow-on question, but one easy answer is that no, you can’t do sub-sub-categories with the “:” option. You CAN however do multiple Fills, so let’s say you’re responsible for 75% of a bill and your partner pays the other 25%. You could do a Fill from your income of the 75% and a different Fill from their income of the 25%. That way it’s one envelope for the bill, but two sources to fill it. Maybe that would help?

thanks Tiffany and sorry if I cannot make me that clear in my questions. but my problem is not about filling one envelope with two accounts. It is about having two indipendent accounts not merging their balance and having a sufficient number of level of envelopes to better organize the work.
the problem is that grouping envelopes in not even possibile on APP. Do you confirm?

Ah yes, if you don’t want to merge the balances in your budget, you’ll need two different budgets and two different logins. You could create an envelope that mirrors an account manually (this is how I keep my Savings balances out of “Available” yet track them in Goodbudget) and/or create a second household for the other monies (this is how I track my US vs. foreign accounts/transactions) but both require a bit of extra work and may be somewhat cumbersome for a new user. I’ve been using Goodbudget for many, many years so I don’t mind the extra work—none of the other budget apps were even close when it came to what I was looking for.

Hi Tiffany, thanks. so how could I have two separate logins? does it mean two separate subscriptions?

It would mean two separate households, but you might check with the admins about combining them under one payment. I know they did that for some folks with accounts in multiple countries a few years ago, but I’m not sure if it’s still an option. Otherwise yes, it would be two subscriptions.
